​Welcome! I am Dr. Shwetha Mangalesh, a physician and researcher dedicated to advancing neonatal eye health and preventing childhood blindness worldwide. With a focus on Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), my work spans innovative telemedicine programs, global health initiatives, and cutting-edge research across the United States, India, and Africa. Through collaboration, technology, and policy changes, I aim to create sustainable solutions for equitable newborn eye care.

EXPERIENCE
Academic & Professional Journey
Medical School
I completed my medical degree at a rural hospital in India, where healthcare access and resources were limited. This was my first experience with providing care to an underserved population.
Research Scholar
As a researcher at Duke University, I have spearheaded groundbreaking projects that have contributed significantly to the technological advancements in the diagnosis of newborn eye diseases.
Research Lead and Marketing
At the global non-profit initiative, EYESHA Foundation, I am responsible for the planning, design, implementation, training, and oversight of newborn eye screening in Africa. I have also created business plans for the manufacturing of low-cost devices for child eye screening. I designed and maintained the website for the foundation.
Founder and CEO
To support the implementation of eye screening programs in low and middle-income countries, I am building a training and telemedicine platform to facilitate upskilling of technicians in underserved areas.
Advocacy
In the efforts to increase funding for the National Institute of Health, I met with Senators and Congresspersons at Capitol Hill, to present and discuss the role of research and its impact on the economy and healthcare advancements.
Mentor
I actively mentors aspiring medical students and researchers, interested in technology and its global health impact.
